AC Joint Injuries Surgical Treatment
Surgery for a shoulder separation is indicated in a defined group: the high-grade injuries that do not stabilize on their own, and the lower-grade injuries that have failed a thorough course of rehabilitation. Timing matters more here than in most shoulder surgery, because an injury treated within the first few weeks can often be stabilized while the ligaments heal, whereas the same injury treated months later requires reconstruction with a graft. Dr. Rynecki Baker grades these injuries carefully at the first visit for exactly this reason.
Some loss of the correction over time is recognized after these procedures, and a small residual step is common and usually of no functional consequence. Every patient receives a written protocol specific to the procedure performed, and Dr. Rynecki Baker works closely with each patient and their physical therapist throughout recovery. The scapular program continues well beyond the point at which the shoulder feels better.
